Councillor Kelly's statement:
It was an honour to take part in today’s National Truth and Reconciliation Day Ceremony held at the Diefenbunker and organized by Marc Forget and his team at Makatew Workshops.
It’s not always easy or comfortable to hear about the abuse inflicted on the Indigenous Peoples of Turtle Island by our governments and institutions, but understanding the truth of our past is necessary as there’ll be no reconciliation without truth.
It was great to see so many people come out to hear the stories and experiences of survivors and how, as non-Indigenous Canadians, we must all do our part to work toward reconciliation and a better future for all Canadians.
