Old Carp Road Traffic Calming Study: Survey Now Open

The City of Ottawa is conducting a traffic calming study for Old Carp Road (between Old Second Line Road and Halton Terrace) in response to traffic safety concerns raised by the public.


The purpose of this study is to:


  • Reduce excessive vehicle speeds

  • Improve safety for all road users, including pedestrians and cyclists.

  • Support walking and cycling along the corridor

  • Develop context-appropriate traffic calming solutions.

Study Area


The study area is Old Carp Road between Old Second Line and Halton Terrace, as shown below:



Existing Roadway Conditions


The following is a summary of existing roadway conditions of Old Carp Road between Old Second Line Road and Halton Terrace:


  • Road classification: Collector road

  • Road width: 6.2 m – 6.6 m

  • Posted speed limit

    • 60 km/h (between Second Line Road and 110 m east of Old Second Line Road)

    • 40 km/h (between 110 m east of Old Second Line Road and Halton Terrace)

  • 85th percentile speed: 73 km/h

    • The 85th percentile speed is the speed at or below which 85% of vehicles travel. It is generally considered to reflect a speed that most drivers perceive as reasonable and safe under existing conditions, representing the upper range of typical driver behaviour and commonly used as a standard measure of operating speed.

    • If the operating speed is significantly higher than the posted speed limit, it may indicate a need for traffic calming measures to help bring speeds closer to the intended limit.

  • Land use: Primarily suburban residential

  • Sensitive land uses nearby: Parks


Key Traffic Issues


  • Excessive operating speeds well above the posted speed limit are not appropriate for a residential neighbourhood and create safety concerns for residents and other vulnerable road users.

  • Pedestrian safety concerns at crossings due to high speeds.

  • Low stop sign compliance at the intersection of Old Carp Road and Old Second Line Road


Recommended Plan


A recommended plan has been developed to address these issues. The recommended plan includes nine speed humps and a short sidewalk section on the south side between Marchbrook Circle and Dunollie Park.



Please note that the above recommended measures are conceptual in nature and may be refined, modified, replaced, or removed during the detailed design and/or construction phases.


We invite you to provide your feedback by completing our online survey. Your input is essential to ensuring the needs and preferences of the community are considered in the final plan. We are seeking feedback on the following:


  • Support or concerns with specific measures

  • Local knowledge of traffic issues


The survey will be open for three weeks from June 26 to July 21, 2026.

Feedback from the online survey will be reviewed and used to refine the recommended plan before proceeding to the detailed design.


Information collected through this survey will be used by the City of Ottawa to assess potential roadway modifications for Old Carp Road. The City does not intend to collect personal information through this survey. Any personal information that you submit may be removed and will otherwise be used and disclosed in accordance with the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, R.S.O. 1990, c M.56.
