Update/Information on New Waste Collection Days

With a new collection contract in place, the collection days have changed for a number of residents in Ward 5. All of Ward 5 is now set to be collected on Mondays. The recycling collection calendar will remain the same, with green bin and paper and cardboard one week, and garbage collection, recycling, and green bin pickup the next week.

You may have already seen information about these changes over the past several weeks through my office's social media, website and newsletter, as well as updates from the City of Ottawa and the collection contractor, Miller Waste. There have also been radio ads, newspaper coverage, and updated collection calendars, delivered to homes by mail, with details on the new pickup days.

Some people appear to have missed this messaging and we will be reaching out to the communications group at the City after this week, once we hear about any issues that may have occurred, and how people were missed in the communications efforts.

There was also mention of people missing a pickup because of the time the operator arrived at their property. Many mentioned that they had gotten used to pickup taking place at a certain time of day.

Section 9.2 of the Solid Waste Services bylaw says:

-    Homeowners must ensure that all collectable waste is set out at the point of collection no later than 7:00 a.m. on the scheduled collection day in order to receive collection services.

We understand that many residents have been used to their collection taking place at a consistent time for years, and that this change as of March 30 may take some adjustment. Because collection times are governed by a bylaw that has been in place for more than a decade, there isn’t flexibility to accommodate individual timing preferences.

In communications with our office, the Solid Waste group mentioned the following:

The City will allow each curbside household to place up to six garbage items at the curb on their new scheduled collection day between March 30 and April 24, 2026.

If you missed the opportunity on your garbage collection day on March 30th, you can put up to six items out on the next collection day, which would be April 13, 2026. This will be the only opportunity for Ward 5 residents who missed March 30th to leave out more than the three-item limit on their garbage collection day so I encourage Ward 5 residents to remember this date.

The online collection calendar and the waste collection app have been updated to reflect all changes. If you are signed up for weekly collection reminders, you can continue to rely on them. If you have not signed up yet, I encourage you to do so. You will receive a very helpful text reminder the day before your collection.
