To the residents of Constance Bay,
After an update from Hydro One and consultation with my team, city staff, and members of the community, I have made the decision to postpone tonight’s community meeting/town hall due to the large-scale weather event we experienced late last night and the power outage that has come with it.
This is happening at a time when the river is very high and will continue to rise into Thursday and possibly Friday, and there are residents of Constance Bay who are not only nervously monitoring this situation but are actively working to mitigate the flood risk on their property. Many residents of Constance Bay are pumping their basements and are now running generators to ensure they can continue to protect their homes from flooding.
Multiple schools are closed today, and with many residents unable to access running water in their homes, the Constance Bay Community Centre has been opened up for people who need to take a shower, charge their phone, use the Wi-Fi, or warm up.
Hydro One is currently estimating that power will be restored by 8:00 p.m. It is possible that it could be restored earlier, but I cannot wait any longer to make a call on whether to move forward with the meeting tonight, as the Constance Bay Community Centre will still be in use for those in need.
Finally, this has just been a difficult day for many in the community trying to juggle work, children, generators, sandbags, etc., which could greatly impact people’s ability to attend this important community meeting. I am disappointed that this has occurred, especially given the interest levels from the community, as well as the effort that my team, city staff, and I have put into making tonight’s event happen, but I will work with everyone to find an alternative date as soon as possible. My goal is to have this meeting before June.
Please do not hesitate to reach out to my office should you require assistance.
