Supporting Volunteer Efforts in Wards Affected by Extreme Weather on Canada Day

We have all heard about the seriousness of the Canada Day storms, which flooded many homes across the City of Ottawa.
While I have heard from a small number of Ward 5 residents who were affected, it appears our community was spared the worst of it. Unfortunately, thousands of residents in other parts of the city are now facing the difficult task of cleaning up and rebuilding.
Our community has seen more than its fair share of serious storms and natural disasters.
Just over the past 4 years we have had three flood responses during the spring freshet. We have experienced serious tornadoes, derechos, and an ice storm.
During many of these events, particularly the spring floods, we were fortunate to receive support from volunteers who came to West Carleton-March from across the city to help our community.
The floods that these residents have just experienced were very destructive, and occurred in minutes, not days or weeks. Many have been told that their insurance will not cover the damage or their losses. They are exhausted, overwhelmed, and looking for answers and support.
We know what that feels like.
If you have the time and resources to help, I encourage you to consider volunteering. This is an opportunity for those of us who have benefited from the generosity of others in the past to return that kindness and support fellow Ottawa residents in their time of need.
