National Day for Truth and Reconciliation Ceremonies in Carp

Sept 30, 2025

Every year on September 30, Canada observes the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a day to honour the children who never returned home from residential schools, as well as the Survivors, their families, and their communities.

This day serves as a time for reflection on the tragic legacy and ongoing impacts of residential schools. Acknowledging this painful history is essential to the process of reconciliation.

Councillor Kelly's statement:

As part of the annual Truth and Reconciliation Day ceremonies at the Diefenbunker Museum in Carp, I was honoured to be a part of the unveiling and dedication of a beautiful, permanent Land Acknowledgement Monument this morning.

This ceremony was followed by the Truth and Reconciliation Ceremony, hosted by Makatew Workshops, and included the lighting of a sacred fire, cultural presentations, and traditional teachings from Knowledge Keepers and Elders.

I was joined at these ceremonies by MPs Jenna Sudds and Bruce Fanjoy, along with MPP Karen McCrimmon.

It was inspiring to see our community join in for reflection on the tragic legacy and ongoing impacts of residential schools.
